lovely subject I know. Dropped one off for dd on wednesday and it still isnt back. The reception has made me worry as she said they only take this long if they are ';growing' something and need to take more tests on it.

my mind is going overtime, please tell me a) what they are growing and b) whether it is unsual to take this long

Fio, has she had a tummy upset/food-poisoning type symptoms? I would guess that they are possibly culturing an e-coli sample. No personal experience of this but I seem to recall that each time they were checking Pamina's dd for recovery from her attack of e-coli it took a few days...HTH

It took the hospital 2 weeks to process DD2's stool sample

yes she has had a tummy upset i sent her back into school today as i felt she was well enough as she has been ok digestive wise since thursday evening and has been fine in herself all week really. Her teacher has wrote something along the lines of she looks exhausted and what did the Dr say in her home school book and I feel guilty for sending her back now

If she was inpatient it normally takes a day or two. The delay is probably getting the results to the GP. I would ring the results line at the hospital. The receptionist is talking garbage!!!Hope this helps

Well don't feel guilty Fio, if she is OK digestive-wise then it is not likely to be e-coli love. That makes you majorly poorly, I have seen for myself.
Could maybe be salmonella? Dh got that on our second or third date, poor love and no I was not cooking for him) and although the tummy upset stuff resolved quickly and he seemed better, he did need further treatment when salmonella was confirmed.
Hope she feels properly better soon.

oh salmonella, do they still send environmental health round your house? I remember they turned up on the dorrstep when my sister had it, I found it most odd

I do feel majorly guilty

I used to work in a microbiology lab processing results.

Usually full results within 72 hours unless they are holding it back for specific sub-type tests - but if they are then they would have informed the gp of an initial positive result within 24-48 hrs.

We only telephoned positive results, negatives were posted. Going by the time span I would hazard a guess that the sample was clear.

Fio, don't feel guilty, it may just be a viral thing, there is lots of bugs about. It may not be food poisoning at all. I would ring the hospital pathology dept, they should help. Don't know much about environmental health, sorry.
